Tracy Sigdestad
South Dakota State Advocate
Tracy is a dedicated outdoor professional based in the Black Hills of South Dakota, with over a decade of experience in environmental education, land stewardship, and wilderness leadership. From 2013 to 2018, they served as a State Advocate, leading statewide efforts to promote ethical outdoor practices. They are also the founder of South Dakota’s first Wilderness Therapy program, which supports healing and growth for at-risk youth and women through land-based, trauma-responsive experiences.
With strong ties to the Indigenous community, they center their work around Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Indigenous land science and principles, ensuring that cultural respect and ancestral knowledge guide both education and conservation efforts. As a former Crew Leader for South Dakota Game, Fish & Parks, they facilitated naturalist programs, interpretive trail experiences, and community engagement that deepened public appreciation for the land.
Their favorite outdoor activities include hiking, canoeing, snowshoeing, and nature photography—both to share wild, natural places with people who may never have the opportunity to visit them in person, and to document areas under threat or rich in history for preservation and awareness.
As a State Advocate, their goal is to advance Leave No Trace priorities by promoting environmental ethics, protecting fragile ecosystems, and empowering individuals to minimize their impact, while also uplifting Indigenous knowledge systems, fostering responsible recreation, and honoring the land for future generations.
