Hot Spot - City of Lansing, MI

The park system managed by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department is experiencing severe impacts from outdoor activities and is one of the many Hot Spots in 2018. With site-specific training, consulting, educational programs, service projects and more, these threatened areas can be put on a road to a healthy recovery.

The city of Lansing, Michigan is an urban community home to a population of about 117,000 people. The city manages over 130 parks which are increasingly popular with the local community and tourists alike. The city is also home 16 miles of river trail, most of which runs adjacent to the Grand and Red Cedar rivers and Sycamore Creek. Recreation along the rivers has heavily impacted these shorelines, causing severe erosion along the river banks. Many of the city's parks have also been damaged by graffiti and litter.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is teaming up with the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department to execute a week of targeted training, education programs and service work with agency staff, key stakeholders and members of the local community. The overall goal of these efforts is the long-term improvement of resource conditions, increased awareness of impacts in the parks, elevated Leave No Trace programs within agency management plans and increased use of Leave No Trace skills and ethics by the visiting public. This week of action based events is just one step in helping City of Lansing parks on its road to recovery.
