Gold Standard Site
San Juan Islands
Lopez Island, WA
The collaboration among various federal, state, and local agencies — National Park Service, Bureau of Land Management, Fish and Wildlife Service, Washington State Parks, San Juan County Land Bank, San Juan Conservation District, and San Juan County Government — is incredibly effective at instilling Leave No Trace. The Leave No Trace education comes from the variety of settings, instead of just one park location. Everyone at the table understands the value of Leave No Trace and know education is needed for people to incorporate it into their actions. There are many that get the message and want to further benefit the community by making changes in their backyard.
- San Juan Islands achieved a score of 38/40 at the time it was designated as a Gold Standard Site.
