Utah State Advocate

Matthew Durrant is the new Utah State Leave No Trace Advocate, bringing a wealth of experience as a Level 3 Instructor with a deep commitment to outdoor ethics. With over two decades of involvement with Leave No Trace, Matthew has taught numerous Level 1 and Level 2 courses across the United States, sharing his expertise with a wide range of outdoor enthusiasts of all ages. His passion for conservation and stewardship has been shaped largely through his work with Scouting, where he has served as the Outdoor Ethics and Conservation Committee Chair for the Crossroads of the West Council for several years. In this role, he has fostered strong connections between local Scouting, conservation organizations, and state and federal land managers. As a member of Scouting America’s National Outdoor Ethics and Conservation Subcommittee, Matthew works to spread the message of responsible environmental
care nationwide. As a zealous advocate for public lands, he believes deeply in our shared responsibility to protect and defend the amazing natural heritage we American citizens have been entrusted with by previous generations.

Matthew is an avid peakbagger, backpacker, and photographer, often drawing inspiration from the landscapes he loves in both his visual art and music. A recognized composer of original electronic concert music with environmental and natural themes, Matthew holds a PhD from the University of Utah and teaches Music Theory, Humanities, and Music Technology at the University of Utah, Utah Valley University, and Salt Lake Community College. A native Utahn, he lives in Midvale with his wife and four children, who share his love for outdoor adventures and nature. He looks forward to connecting with Utahns from all walks of life, increasing educational opportunities and exposure to the message of Leave No Trace, and facilitating cooperation on issues regarding our care and stewardship of this beautiful Earth we call home.
