Kim Waites

Alabama State Advocate

Hi, I’m Kim Waites, the Alabama State Advocate for Leave No Trace. I have spent nearly two decades working to protect our public lands through education, stewardship, and volunteer service. As a Leave No Trace Instructor and educator, I believe that every outdoor experience is an opportunity to inspire people to care for the places they love.

Alabama’s wild places have always held a special place in my heart. Over the years, I’ve worked with volunteers, land managers, schools, and community organizations to promote responsible outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship throughout the state. When I’m not teaching Leave No Trace, you’ll usually find me hiking, backpacking, camping, kayaking, or photographing nature. I especially enjoy introducing new hikers and families to the outdoors and helping them build the confidence to explore responsibly.

As Alabama’s State Advocate, my goal is to expand Leave No Trace education across the state by supporting instructors, partnering with land managers and outdoor organizations, and empowering people of all ages to become lifelong stewards of our shared public lands. I believe that small actions, practiced consistently, can make a lasting difference in protecting Alabama’s incredible natural heritage for future generations. Reach out to get involved!
