Each year, Leave No Trace hand-selects nominated outdoor spaces that deserve collective care and attention. By designating them as Spotlights, we’re rallying the local community to step up, join forces with Leave No Trace, and make a meaningful impact that can revitalize and protect these special places where we recreate, enjoy one another’s company, and elevate our health physically, mentally and emotionally.

San Bernardino National Forest – Big Bear Discovery Center has been selected as a 2026 Leave No Trace Spotlight. The Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Team will be at Big Bear Discovery Center April 30 – May 2, collaborating with hosts and partners on a variety of programs including workshops, community outreach, and stewardship projects.

Opportunities to Get Involved:

FRIDAY, MAY 1 | 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Leave No Trace Pop-Up Education & Outreach, Big Bear Discovery Center,  Fawnskin, CA 

Join Leave No Trace, San Bernardino National Forest, and Big Bear Discovery Center staff and partners for engaging and family-friendly outreach and education. Pick up quick, practical tips on how to be a great outdoor steward and help keep our forests clean, beautiful, and thriving for everyone to enjoy.

FRIDAY, MAY 1 | 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm

Leave No Trace Trivia Night & Social, Big Bear Discovery Center,  Fawnskin, CA 

If you love the outdoors, join us for this interactive game night to gauge your knowledge of Leave No Trace practices and principles while learning tips and techniques for protecting the forest and all your favorite outdoor spaces. Whether you are new to Leave No Trace or consider yourself an expert, don’t miss this chance to participate in fun stewardship trivia, mingle with Spotlight hosts and partners, and win some cool prizes!

SATURDAY, MAY 2 | 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

Volunteer Day at Big Bear Lake, Big Bear Discovery Center, Fawnskin, CA 

Give back and join this fun and rewarding volunteer opportunity! Volunteers will meet at Big Bear Discovery Center. Projects will include a trash and litter clean up, light trail maintenance, and related restoration work along the Alpine Pedal Path in San Bernardino National Forest. Volunteers will be introduced to Leave No Trace and learn more about stewardship education before going out on the trail.

Important information: Volunteers must dress for the weather and wear long pants and closed-toe shoes. Bring water, snacks, a hat, and sunscreen. Please bring your own gloves if possible; otherwise, gloves, tools, and other PPE as needed will be provided.

RSVP is encouraged but not required. Walks-ins are welcome.
