Surviving the Shutdown

Public lands are feeling the pain right now. Here’s a look at the role The Center is playing in getting Leave No Trace information into the hands of those that need it most during the shutdown:

• A Leave No Trace team will soon be on-site at Horseshoe Bend, and other iconic public lands, facilitating pop-up workshops and disseminating educational materials.
• We have alerted our community of educators, partners, volunteers, members and influencers to help spread Leave No Trace information at this critical time, meanwhile encouraging individuals to volunteer at a park near them.
• We are continuing to release real-time Leave No Trace best practices specific to the Government shutdown. To stay informed, subscribe to Leave emails here and follow Leave No Trace on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. Here are our posted articles to date:

• Leave No Trace In Every Park aims to ensure that everyone who steps into a national park or natural area gains the tools to develop an outdoor ethic. Once accomplished, this initiative will better arm the public with the the skills they need to lessen their impacts when future shutdowns occur and beyond.
• The Zero Landfill Initiative, piloted last summer in coordination with a host of partners, seeks to significantly reduce visitor-generated waste at our national parks, thereby minimizing trashed natural areas during other shutdowns and precarious times.

There’s never been a more important time to support The Center’s critical work for the public. Ensuring people practice Leave No Trace is a vital response to the threats that your national parks are facing.
