Leave No Trace Spotlight: Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument

Leave No Trace’s new Spotlight program is a multi-day event to bring attention to community conservation, spread education, and build momentum and inspire involvement for the future.

The Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Team will be at the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Spotlight April 13-15, collaborating with hosts and partners on a variety of programs including stewardship projects, workshops, and community outreach.

Opportunities to Get Involved:

Thursday, April 13: Leave No Trace and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Trivia Night from 7:00 pm – 8:30 pm @ Peekaboo Canyon Wood Fired Kitchen, Kanab

Join Grand Staircase Escalante Partners and Leave No Trace for a fun night of food, beverages, trivia, and prizes! Topics for trivia will be based around the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. RSVP encouraged but not required.

Friday, April 14: Expert Walk and Talk from 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join this guided 3 mile hike to learn more about Leave No Trace in cultural landscapes. This hike will be led by GSENM Archaeologist Sandra Zarzycka and GSENM Recreation Planner Clay Stewart in the Kanab area. Suggested items to bring along: water, snacks, lunch, hat, sunscreen, daypack, phone/camera, and wear good hiking shoes.

Friday, April 14: Indigenous Perspective and Dark Sky Principles of Leave No Trace from 7:00 pm – 10:30 pm

Join Autumn Gillard a maternal descendant from the Cedar Band of Paiutes from the Paiute Indian Tribe of Utah and current administrative assistant for Pipe Springs National Monument to expand your knowledge about Leave No Trace and the night sky. Stellar Vista Observatory will be providing telescopes and astronomical expertise for a night of stars, stories, and learning at the Ponderosa Grove Campground in Kanab.

Saturday, April 15: Service Project at the Toadstools from 9:00 am – 4:00 pm

Join Grand Staircase Escalante Partners, Leave No Trace, and the Bureau of Land Management for a day of stewardship and learning at the Toadstools in GSENM. Learn more about Leave No Trace topics while addressing visitor impacts like graffiti, trash, and trail degradation. Volunteers should have the ability to hike around 2 miles and lift 20-30 lbs throughout the day. Please bring your own hiking gear, water, and lunch.
