Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor Course – RMI Expeditions

This unique program couples a Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor course with mountaineering skills instruction and an ascent of a classic North Cascade peak, Mt. Baker. The Mt. Baker Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor Course and Climb is the perfect adventure for those new to climbing or those who have previous climbing experience. The Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor Course provides participants with extensive training in Leave No Trace skills and ethics, through practical application in a field-based setting. The course is designed for people who are actively teaching or would like to teach backcountry skills and/or provide recreation information to the public. This course is also well suited for climbing recreationalists looking for an immersive Leave No Trace course. Successful graduates of the course can teach Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor Courses, Skills Courses, and Workshops.

During a five-day ascent of Mt. Baker, the course will focus on the specifics of running a Leave No Trace course – planning, logistics, equipment, managing groups in the field, risk management, teaching techniques, and more. With one classroom day and five days spent in the field, the course will cover the Leave No Trace Seven Principles and discuss outdoor ethics in-depth, as well as give the participants the tools and techniques for disseminating low-impact skills to outdoor enthusiasts. This course will include a full day of mountaineering training plus camp craft and self-care skills to prepare for the climb. The classroom will consist of old growth forests, heather meadows, and high alpine glaciers and the course will have an emphasis on Leave No Trace techniques in an alpine environment.
