Consider the Impact of Your Pet
Consider the Impact of Your Pet
Did You Know?
By mass, dogs and cats produce 30% as much feces per year as the entire population of humans in the United States yet up to 25% of dog owners resist picking up after their pets.
What Does This Mean?
Our pets enrich our lives in so many ways, yet they create their own environmental impact too. The 163 million dogs and cats in the U.S. eat mostly meat-based diets and produce tons of waste annually. This directly translates into environmental costs such as greenhouse gas emissions and pollution that are shared by society.
What Can You Do Right Now?
YOUR ACTION MATTERS
- Make informed pet food choices – for dogs, opt for lower meat content foods. For dogs and cats choose proteins that have less environmental impact in their production, such as chicken or rabbit.
- Always dispose of pet waste properly. Dog waste contains millions of disease-causing bacteria and other microorganisms, so it is important to pick it up and dispose of it properly, even in your own yard. If you have a cat, choose non-clay based litter options that are lower in chemicals and can be composted.
- Keep dogs leashed and cats inside to protect local wildlife from being disturbed, chased and/or killed.
