Delano Park 2016

Delano Park consists of 28 acres of public space in the heart of Decatur, Alabama, a town of 55,816 on the banks of the Tennessee River. Delano Park has 500+ trees, 10,000+ plants, including a rose garden and miles of walking paths.  The Park was established in 1887 and designed by a contemporary of Fredrick Law Olmsted, who designed Central Park. Delano Park is named after President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The park receives heavy visitation, resulting in concentrated impacts including litter, tree damage, vegetation trampling, and social trails. During the Hot Spot, the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer team held meetings and hosted awareness workshops for local stakeholders and conducted youth outreach in classrooms to educate students on the Seven Principles. Trashcans were also installed alongside pet waste bag dispensers in the park. The team conducted outreach at the River Clay Festival in the area and removed 60 bags of trash from the park during a service project.
