3 Leave No Trace-Inspired Halloween Costumes

Susy Alkaitis - October 28, 2019

Have you been too busy enjoying the outdoors to find a Halloween costume? Do you need a costume that’s fun and shows your passion for protecting the outdoors? We have you covered. Check out these these 3 costume ideas to celebrate Halloween- Leave No Trace style.

1. The 7 Principles (A Framework for Outdoor Ethics)
It can be hard to choose your favorite
Leave No Trace Principle. So why not choose all of them and dress as the full framework for making good decisions in the outdoors! The 7 Principles provide simple guidelines to inform our actions and protect the outdoors. Who can you teach the Leave No Trace Principles to this Halloween?

2. Campfire Soup
Are you planning to have a campfire this Halloween? Campfires can be a part of a fun Halloween night, but it is important to totally extinguish them to prevent wildfires. Consider dressing up as a can of campfire soup to remind yourself how to check that your fire is safely out. Our recipe for campfire soup: add plenty of water, stir the ashes around with a stick or shovel, and check that fire is cool to the touch before leaving. Check out this video to learn more about campfire soup.

3. The Bear-muda Triangle
Are you in a rush to find a costume? All you need is a kitchen utensil, a bear canister, and a tent-shaped tin foil hat. Spread them out… And Voila! You are the bear-muda triangle. It’s not only a great Halloween costume, it is also an important technique to protect yourself from bears. When you first get to camp, establish a bear-muda triangle by setting up your tent, kitchen area, and food storage 200ft (70 big steps) apart. This keeps smelleable items (food, toiletries, trash, etc.) and the bears they attract away from your tent.

No matter what costume you choose this Halloween, remember to keep Leave No Trace in mind for all of you outdoor autumn adventures. Enjoy Halloween. Enjoy Your World. And Leave No Trace.
