Let's Go Camping

The Oregon Parks and Recreation Department offers a summer series of camping trips for people of all ages. If people don’t have a tent, sleeping bag, stove, or any of the other basics, that is not a problem. The Let’s Go Camping program provides everything for people who are interested in learning how to go camping as well as instructions on basic camping skills. Through the generous funding from The North Faces Explore Your Parks Program the Let’s Go Camping program is possible. The LGCP is a weekend long event that families can sign up for around 30 dollars. Our past two weekends were spent...

Making the Connection

Chattanooga, Tennessee: As Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers, we are lucky to teach people of all personalities, in a variety of different places all over the country - students with different levels of engagement in the outdoors. The beauty of Leave No Trace is that it is relevant and applicable to anyone at any level; whether you are mountaineering or simply walking your dog at the local park - you don’t need to be an outdoor expert to see the benefits of practicing Leave No Trace outside! However, we often teach youth in urban areas that have very little interaction with wild and...

Connecting kids to the outdoors

Today we taught Leave No Trace to students from James Workman Middle School in Cathedral City, California. We attended a field trip with them to Mount San Jacinto State Park outside of Palm Springs, California. We took a tram that lifted us from 2,000 feet elevation up to 8,000 feet elevation on top of the mountains surrounding the city. The intention of today’s field trip was to teach Leave No Trace and get the kids outside. As soon as we left the tram station we arrived to find that above the city was a cool, tree covered, and a beautiful mountain oasis. It was a nice change from the arid...

REI and PEAK

During the past two weeks we put on three PEAK (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids) workshops for REIs in Southern Arizona. Teachers, Scout leaders, and outdoor educators from around the Phoenix and Tucson area came to learn how to incorporate Leave No Trace into the programs they run for kids and teens. Leave No Trace has an important partnership with REI. Not only is REI a proud partner for the Subaru / Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer program, but they also support the PEAK Program. The PEAK pack is an assortment of 6 activities included in a flexible binder that focuses on teaching...

What I Learned Backpacking in Rocky Mountain National Park. Part 1

Rocky Mountain National Park in northern Colorado is a truly wild and unforgiving landscape riddled with features carved by the powerful hands of time. “The Park” holds a power and meaning different for all who spend time there. The 416 square miles of untrammeled and rugged terrain provide stories people carry proudly with them for the rest of their days. Stories of triumph, solitude, defeat, joy, danger, adventure, and simplicity. This is my story of a week spent in The Park, what I learned about Leave No Trace and other lessons on a life well lived. This story begins with the year-long...
