The Millennial Generation Gets Outside!

Boston, MA. This past weekend, we joined 150 young leaders of the Millennial Generation at the University of Massachusetts-Boston for the Signature Summit of Outdoor Nation. What is the Millennial Generation, you ask? This is the current generation of 12-30 year olds that are faced with a problematic epidemic of obesity and nature deficit disorder. This is also a generation open to diversity, change, and progression. At the summit, participants are challenged to create projects that will increase awareness and usage of outdoors spaces by children in the United States. These projects focus on...

Outdoor Nation Austin

At the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics we aim to create environmental stewards through a three-part approach: educate, connect, protect. At the Outdoor Nation Signature Summit in Austin, TX, the e-tour team got to hit on all three of those ideas as they relate to Outdoor Ethics and the mission of Outdoor Nation -- getting kids outside and excited about the environment! Throughout the weekend-long conference, attendees from high schools, universities, and recent graduates from across Texas and the country discussed how to get youth outside. They thought up creative ways to reach youth...

Take it or Leave it.

South Fork Upper Skokomish River, Olympic National Forest, WA As you can see from the footprint of our MSR tent above, life on the road as a Subaru/ Leave No Trace Traveling Trainer does not require a lot of space. Knowing what you need and what you do not on any outing can make or break your trip. Team West believes that to Plan Ahead and Prepare is the first and most crucial step to keeping yourself safe, minimizing your impacts on the environment, practicing the Seven Priciples of Leave No Trace and of course, having FUN while you go outside to play. There are several steps to take for...

Up a Creek in Austin

Joining with our educational partner the Student Conservation Association, or SCA, the Leave No Trace e-tour Team landed in Austin last Friday for a cleanup, some awareness workshops, and an overnight campout filled with s'mores and fellowship! Our day began on Waller Creek on the campus of the University of Texas-Austin, where we met up with some of SCA's national crew leaders, some participants from that weekend's Outdoor Nation Summit in Austin, and the office of Environmental Health and Safety at UT-Austin for a clean up event. After collecting trash ranging from cigarette butts to water-...

Paddle Bainbridge

Over the weekend Team West joined Olympic Outdoor Center for their annual Paddle Bainbridge event. The two day 26 mile paddle and camp out served as an awesome venue to bolster a stronger sense of community, experience the scenery of beautiful Puget Sound and as always, bringing awareness to the ideas of Leave No Trace. A special thanks to Olympic Outdoor Center for putting the event together, Washington Water Trails Association for providing local knowledge, and once again to Fay Bainbridge Park for hosting the campers. Be the captain of your own stewardship. Mark & Tara

Honorary Cajuns

Down on the Bayou in the July heat, the Leave No Trace e-tour team joined up with Boy Scouts from across Southern Louisiana for a weekend full of Leave No Trace education, volunteer conservation work, campsongs, and tasty Cajun eating. The Evangaline Area Council organized a whole weekend dedicated to Leave No Trace where we held awareness workshops with adult Scouters, Boy Scouts, Webelos, and Cub Scouts. No matter their age group,6 all of the participants really dug into our cathole discussions. What's more fun to talk about with Boy Scouts than how to poop in the woods? Absolutely nothing...

The Leave No Trace e-tour team will be joining the Student Conservation Association and the University of Texas-Austin for a clean up of Waller Creek in Austin, TX, in conjunction with the Outdoor Nation Summit that weekend. They will also be doing an Awareness Workshop with SCA staff attending the event that afternoon.

A Summer On Bainbridge Island...

...would be magical, but in the world of a Subaru Traveling Trainer you've got to fit that all in a week. We spent this week working with Bainbridge Island Metro Parks and Recreation District . These folks know how to get out and play! On Sunday we joined the Outdoor Programs for a hike on the Elwha River within Olympic National Park. This is a special waterway right now because it is currently undergoing a significant dam removal process. From speaking with guides and locals we learned that salmon have already started using the newly reopened habitat. We spoke to the group about outdoor...
