The Hammock Life

Charleston, SC: After a busy day, how do you like to unwind? For some, the couch is a beckoning force, a place of solace and an opportunity to elevate ones feet. Life on the road as Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers offers adventure at every turn. A bit of relaxation is important to stay balanced though, so at the end of the day we opt out from the couch and trade it in for an ENO Hammock. Put up your feet and take a load off. Enjoy the sounds of nature, a great book, and a cozy place to enjoy a warm meal. Our ENO Hammock is a sacred place for rest and relaxation. Whether it’s strung...

Keeping Wildlife Wild

Cherokee, NC: Great Smoky Mountain National Park is home to some to some of the most impressive landscapes found in the eastern United States. Waterfalls, exposed rock cliffs, and mountains that seemingly go on forever. This area is home to more than 60 mammals including black bears, elk, white-tailed deer, and the elusive bobcat. Visiting any national park is a special experience, an experience worth protecting. It is our job as visitors to understand the ways to protect wildlife while we are in their natural habitats. By doing so, we can preserve the quality of the experience for future...

A Hot Spot To Protect McAfee Knob

Catawba, VA: A crisp breeze slices through the air, and puddles fill spaces in the uneven ground as the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers wrap-up a week of 20 Leave No Trace Awareness Workshops, each a part of the McAfee Knob Hot Spot week. The four mile-long section of Appalachian Trail is the gateway for McAfee Knob and its iconic diving board rock. This precipice of rock overlooking the Roanoke Valley is host to thousands of visitors each hiking season. A favorite trail among many people living in the surrounding towns and cities, the knob is in danger of being loved to death. The...

Minimize Waste to Maximize Space

Minneapolis, MN--Dastardly trash flitters across the parking lot as its potential captor follows in hot pursuit. Every gust of wind helps the debris slink between cars and roll around light posts as it takes aim for a precise exit by way of the storm drain. Once within the dark passages of the drain, the trash will forever be on the run, freely able to wreak havoc on the earth: baiting marine life, contaminating our water, and littering our shorelines. These trash escapees are ever slipping from our overloaded hands, shopping bags, and car doors--they must be better confined, barred within...

Let's Keep The Linville Gorge Gorge-ous

Marion, NC: Steep rock walls, towering peaks, and cascading waterfalls create the wilderness area of the iconic, Linville Gorge. Any outdoor enthusiast would feel at home in the gorge with miles of trails connecting the river with the peaks above. With an increasing amount of visitors each year, the gorge is under threat of being loved to death. The Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers made their way to the Linville Gorge for a week long Hot Spot to help aid in the protection of this heavily used wilderness area. The major impacts that we witnessed during our adventures in the gorge are...
