The Leave No Trace e-tour visited Central Park in New York City this past weekend for Adventures NYC. It was an awesome day, sponsored by partners of the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics including Backpacker Magazine, The North Face, and REI, where we got to talk to a wide range of outdoor users about getting outside, having fun, and taking care of the environment! Day Campin' in Delaware

Summertime means summer camp, and what better type of summer camp than Cub Scout day camp? On Tuesday, the Leave No Trace e-tour Team rolled into Delaware and visited two different day camps from the Del-Mar-Va Council along with Travis McCormick, one of Frank's Scouting friends and an all-star professional Scouter. With a group of excited Scouts, we explored some of the best highlights of Leave No Trace -- Trash Your Trash and the elusive cathole. Our first visit was to the brand new Akridge Scout Reservation in Dover, a beautiful stretch of 85 acres developing into a first class camp. With...

Summer Solstice Splashtacular

This week marks the first day of summer, and summer means beach time. While at Verona Beach State Park in New York last weekend, the Leave No Trace e-tour got to participate in their First Annual Outdoor Extravaganza! Along with local firemen, RV & boat dealers, local environmental groups, and the New York State Parks; we brought the message of Leave No Trace to the many visitors and beach-goers on this packed weekend. Verona Beach State Park is a local, frontcountry favorite for people coming for the weekend or day from the Syracuse, Binghamton, and Utica areas. The park combines camping...

Forces of Nature

Stewards of natural resources and nature, the Natural Lands Trust in Pennsylvania owns 40 properties with 21,000 acres as well as conservation easements on more than 19,000 acres. How do they save land, steward natural resources, and connect with nature? They manage it through volunteers in their Force of Nature program and high quality professional staff, of course. This weekend, the Leave No Trace e-tour team stopped in for two different training sessions with these groups to talk about the principles of Leave No Trace, how to apply them in frontcountry settings, and the ways to approach...

I Would Walk 500 Miles

Back in our old stomping grounds of Washington, DC, the Leave No Trace e-tour made its way to The North Face Endurance Challenge over the weekend. This series of events around the country features races ranging from a half-mile kids race to a 50 Mile Gore-Tex Endurance Challenge. In order to complete this epic quest you need all the dedication, concentration, and sheer physical ability to conquer anything. We were super-impressed by all who took this challenge on! We also want to thank all the Leave No Trace volunteers who helped clean up the festival grounds and the trails, as well as those...

Klamath Falls Recap

In A Sand County Almanac , Aldo Leopold wrote that “the land ethic simply enlarges the boundaries of the community to include soils, waters, plants, and animals, or collectively: the land.” Maybe it’s time for us to flip that idea on its head, and think of bringing Leave No Trace Outdoor Ethics from our backcountry into a community-based approach, a goal the Center has been focusing on over the past few years. By addressing environmental stewardship across different components of a community – land managers, schools, Scout troops, volunteer groups, and community leaders – we can...
