Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor in ASL: Canoe-based Course – Adirondack Mountain Club
This five-day, canoe-based Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor course in American Sign Language is designed for individuals who are actively teaching others backcountry skills or providing recreation information to the public. ADK is partnering with CorpsTHAT and at least one instructor will be Deaf/using ASL as their primary language.
The overall goal of the course is to train educators and others in ways to practice and teach Leave No Trace skills and ethics. Through classroom discussions, lectures, and a four-day canoe camping experience, this course will cover the seven Leave No Trace principles and discuss wildland ethics, as well as give the participants the tools and techniques for disseminating these low-impact skills to other users of public lands. Participants could include a mixture of federal agency partners, educators, outdoor retailers, youth group and outing club leaders, and other outdoor enthusiasts. Upon completion of the course, you will be qualified to teach Leave No Trace Level 1 Instructor courses. The Leave No Trace Level 2 Instructor certification is recognized and valued throughout the outdoor industry.
After one full day of classroom-based instruction at our Education Yurt Village, we will be spending the subsequent four days and three nights canoe camping in a beautiful region of the northern Adirondacks. We’ll paddle only a couple of miles each day on flat and slow moving water, allowing plenty of time to cover the extensive Leave No Trace Level 2 curriculum. The Adirondack Park provides some of the most spectacular paddling in the eastern United States. The St. Regis Canoe Area is the only designated canoe area in the state. It is managed as a wilderness with a focus on non-motorized water recreation and the protection of water quality and fishery resources. Containing the headwaters of the West and Middle branches of the St. Regis and Saranac Rivers, the area is noted for its clear spring-fed ponds, short carries, tranquil beauty and wild character. Participants should be in good physical condition in order to successfully complete the course. You should be able to paddle multiple miles per day, carry a canoe with a partner, and hike with a heavy backpack (about 40-55 pounds). We will camp at designated campsites and explore the possibility of pristine sites across the St. Regis Canoe Area.
Cost: Sliding scale of $540 – 850, includes instruction, interpreters, curriculum, a one-year Leave No Trace Individual Membership, one night’s lodging in the Education Yurt Village, meals from Day #1 dinner through Day #5 lunch, use of group gear, and transportation during the course.
