What Inspires You to #optoutside?

Amelia Island, FL: We love playing outside and we’re guessing you do, too. For us, time spent outdoors is more fun, exhilarating and renewing than pretty much anything else we do.

But sometimes we have to retreat from nature and get stuff done: going to work, attending meetings, shopping for groceries, cleaning our bathrooms. You know the drill.

Yet sometimes even when we have the choice to go outside, we end up doing other things: watching Netflix, checking social media, watching YouTube videos of other people (or cute animals) doing cool things outside. In fact, just writing that sentence created an uncontrollable desire to check my phone for no good reason. #socialmediaaddict

Now, sometimes we can’t be hiking/camping/fishing/climbing/running around the park with the kids. Other times, we end up doing those indoor activities because it’s easier and more convenient than making the effort to get outdoors.

That’s why we love REI’s reminder that this Thanksgiving, we have a choice to #optoutside – to do whatever it is we love in the great outdoors, whether that’s scaling mountains, playing games in the backyard, or anything in between that gets us breathing fresh air, feeling dirt/snow/sand/grass/rocks under our feet, and soaking in views that are always better in person than on a screen.

The great thing about the #optoutside movement is that REI isn’t telling us to “go outside” or “get outdoors.” To #optoutside is a conscious choice on our end - an effort to do what we love that’s always rewarded. Here at Leave No Trace, we feel that deeply. When we inspire people to protect the outdoors, we recognize that long-lasting change tends to come from within. We stubborn humans are less likely to be influenced as a result of external rules or suggestions, but from decisions we’re motivated to make on our own terms.

So, this Black Friday, we will #optoutside. There will certainly still be bathrooms to clean and deals to be had, but this year we’re choosing to do what we love, which will most likely include some combination of beach strolling, mountain biking, and maybe even some clumsy surfing.

Our motivation to #optoutside? We’ve decided you’ll never remember the day off you spent cleaning the bathroom, or the Black Friday spent battling for bargains. The value of time spent outside is far greater than any hot deals found at the stores. (And that’s what cyber Monday is for, right? You know, when you have to be at your desk anyway?)

Opt for fun. Opt for family. Opt for doing what you love. #optoutside
