Description:

The park system managed by the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department is experiencing severe impacts from outdoor activities and is one of twenty Leave No Trace Hot Spots in 2018.

Lansing, Michigan, an urban community of about 117,000 people, is home to more than130 parks which are increasingly popular with the local community and tourists alike. The city also has 16 miles of river trail, most of which run adjacent to the Grand and Red Cedar rivers and Sycamore Creek. Recreation along the rivers has heavily impacted these shorelines, causing severe erosion along the river banks, and many of the city's parks have been damaged by graffiti and litter.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is teaming up with the City of Lansing Parks and Recreation Department to execute a week of targeted training, education programs and service work with agency staff, key stakeholders and members of the local community to help put these threatened areas on a road to recovery.
