Lynden Hill 2020

Milwaukee, WI

Lynden Hill is a beautiful public green space in the center of Milwaukee, WI that offers lessons from the past and a promise of the future. It is a unique landscape, a complete city block with over 50 trees, an expansive grassy space, a sloping hill and a natural amphitheater.  In 1999, Lynden Hill was designated as the City of Milwaukee’s Urban Tree House. This designation is part of an environmental education project of the USDA Forest Service. The goal is to provide opportunities for environmental education in an urban setting. The program is designed to develop an environmental stewardship ethic among youth and to increase public awareness, appreciation and ownership of our natural resources.  While a primary goal of this space has been to provide educational stewardship programs, it is faced with impacts from litter, degradation of the trees and other vegetation, as well as many cumulative impacts resulting from high use.

*Lynden Hill is located on the ancestral lands of the Očeti Šakówiŋ (Sioux), Peoria, Miami, Menominee, and Bodéwadmiakiwen (Potawatomi) and possibly other tribes*
