Barton Creek Greenbelt | March 5-10, 2020

Popular for hiking, swimming, mountain biking, rock climbing and birdwatching, the Barton Creek Greenbelt in a favorite of Austinites! Running through the bustling city of Austin, Texas, “the greenbelt” in an important staple both for locals and visitors alike. Due to the proximity to the city and the variety of access points, Barton Creek sees an enormous amount of visitors daily. This has contributed to numerous impacts including pet management and waste, biking impacts, litter, water resource impacts and more. The Barton Creek Greenbelt is also home to the endangered bracted twistflower which has been further impacted by all of these things.

During the Hot Spot activation, the Subaru/Leave No Trace Team led a variety of workshops, outreach programs, and community events at Barton Creek Greenbelt. During the Salamander Walk Ranger Program, participants learned about how outdoor recreation can impact the salamanders and how Leave No Trace practices can help minimize those impacts. The Promoting Leave No Trace Through Media Channels Workshop highlighted ways to promote Leave No Trace skills and ethics with supportive online messaging and constructive imagery. 175 participants met across 6 different trailheads for the It’s My Park Day, Barton Creek Greenbelt Clean Up. This event began with an engaging Leave No Trace activity and resulted in 7.5 miles of trails being cleaned.
