Hot Spot - Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve

The Mad River Gorge & Nature Preserve in Springfield, Ohio is the Clark County Park District's latest acquisition and Ohio's largest natural rock-climbing area. After being owned privately for decades, the park district was recently able to purchase several acquisitions of land with the help of a large grant from the Clean Ohio Conservation fund. The Ohio Climbers Coalition and the Access Fund teamed up to help clean up and develop this new nature preserve as well as preserve the quality of the climbing cliffs for generations to come.

The cliffs in the Mad River Gorge are about 45-50 feet high. They offer diverse climbing opportunities for beginners as well as experienced individuals. Below are some of the recreation-related impacts found in this new climbing area.

  • litter/trash
  • visitor created trails (undesignated trail use)
  • invasive species impacts
  • rock climbing/bouldering impacts

The Leave No Trace team will be executing a week of education and outreach in and around the Mad River Gorge. Below, you can view details on public workshops that will be held in conjunction with multiple projects designed to help address these issues during the Hot Spots effort.
