The Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge in New York is experiencing severe impacts from outdoor activities and is one of the twenty Leave No Trace Hot Spots in 2018. Located in New York City, the refuge is one of the most significant bird sanctuaries in the Northeastern United States. It serves as a popular destination for bird watchers, hikers, boaters and those looking to take part in one of the park's many ranger or family programs.

Overuse of many areas of the refuge has led to significant recreation-related impacts including invasive species, visitor created trails, litter, and user conflicts. As a Leave No Trace Hot Spot, the refuge will receive a site-specific blend of training for agency staff, targeted education programs for local youth and adults, resource monitoring programs, service work, and expert consultation to put this threatened area on the road to recovery.
