Leave No Trace Master Educator Course – Appalachian Mtn Club (AMC)

Leave No Trace is a national and international program designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb. The program strives to educate all those who enjoy the outdoors about the nature of their recreational impacts as well as techniques to prevent and minimize such impacts. Leave No Trace is best understood as an educational and ethical program, not as a set of rules and regulations. Nine out of ten people who visit the outdoors are uniformed about Leave No Trace and minimizing their impacts. Leave No Trace training is helping to instill an outdoor ethic in all those who enjoy spending time outside.

This five-day LNT Master Educator course is designed for individuals who are actively teaching others backcountry skills or providing recreation information to the public. Through classroom discussion, lectures, and a four-day backpacking trip, this course will cover the seven Leave No Trace principles and discuss wildland ethics, as well as give the participants the tools and techniques for dissemination these low impact skills to other users of the backcountry. Participants could include a mixture of federal agency partners, educators, outdoor retailers, youth group and outing club leaders, and other backcountry users. Upon completion of the course, you will be qualified to teach Leave No Trace Trainer courses. The Leave No Track Master Educator qualification is recognized and valued throughout the outdoor industry. Participants should be comfortable hiking in the mountains and spending 3 nights in the backcountry in all weather conditions. This course does not teach backpacking skills, prior backpacking experience is not required but highly recommended. Participants will be carrying personal gear as well as group gear in a backpack 2- 5miles each day. All backpacking gear, food and lodging during the course are provided by the AMC.
