Why Leave No Trace is important to Expedition Mississippi:

Guest Blog from the folks at Expedition Mississippi:

To make a long answer short, WE NEED THE ENVIRONMENT MORE THAN IT NEEDS US AND OUR POSTERITY WILL NEED IT EVEN MORE THAN WE DO.

We rely on the environment more than we realize. It surrounds us 24/7, 365 days a year. The environment produces the air we breathe, the water we drink and the food that we eat . We are just a small part of the intricate system that makes up the whole. Yet in today’s society many forget that. We forget that we are not alone, that there are other species on this earth with which we co-exist. We often imagine ourselves separated from the rest of the natural environment.

It’s as if we lived in our own “human sphere” and everything else lives in a separate sphere that we call the “outdoors” or “nature”. This outside sphere is a place that we might dabble into for a weekend camping trip or brief nature hike, then just as quickly return to our own sphere or “house”. This concept must appear very strange to the rest of life on earth. To every other living being there is no separation, just one planet where we all co-exist.

Despite the illusion of the separate “human sphere”, co-existence is the true reality. To us members of Expedition Mississippi, Leave No Trace is the leading organization that promotes this so basic, yet crucial idea through their dedication to preserve the natural environment. Pack out what you pack in. Take pictures, leave only footprints. These are the basics to conservation and preservation, and the essentials to co-existence. We must be conscience of the fact that we do not live apart from nature but rather under the same roof, in the same house.

By following some of the basic guidelines that LNT provides, we can help preserve this house.  Whether we’re hiking in the woods, out on the lake fishing, or sitting around a campfire with friends, let’s remember to wipe our feet and leave our soiled shoes at the door when we enter “mother nature’s house”. We must do this if we want it be there for generations to come.

May we always leave this place better than the way we found it…
