Master Educator Course Providers Selected for 2020-24

Feb 13, 2019 (Boulder, CO): Once every five years the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics conducts a request for proposal (RFP) process for determining Master Educator Course Providers. The RFP for the 2020-24 Provider cycle began during the summer of 2018 and recently concluded with the selection of twelve organizations that will be authorized to offer the course from 2020-2024. According to Education Director, Ben Lawhon, the applicant pool for the recent RFP was extraordinarily strong. “While there has always been significant interest in offering the Leave No Trace Master Educator Course, the caliber of organizations that applied during our recent process was remarkable.” The current pool of course providers, approved to offer courses through 2019, includes NOLS, the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, the Student Conservation Association, Green Earth Outdoors, Landmark Learning, the Adirondack Mountain Club, the Boy Scouts of America, Solid Rock Outdoor Ministries, and the Backcountry Horsemen of California.

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics was established 25 years ago as a non-profit organization to promote responsible enjoyment of the outdoors. Leave No Trace partners — land management agencies, the outdoor industry, outdoor enthusiast groups, colleges, universities, non-profit organizations, youth serving organizations, and other affiliates — support a unified, consistent minimum impact program based on the best available scientific research and outdoor expertise. A principle goal of the Center is the continued expansion of a training structure that instills outdoor ethics and provides deep understanding of, and teaches skills necessary for, enjoying the outdoors responsibly. Development and dissemination of high quality Leave No Trace training programs is critical to the overall success of Leave No Trace.

The Leave No Trace Master Educator Course is a core and vital component of the Leave No Trace training structure. The course delivers comprehensive Leave No Trace skills, ethics, and teaching practices to participants. The Master Educator Course is the most in-depth course offered through the Center. The course produces a cadre of highly knowledgeable Leave No Trace educators (nearly 11,000 to date) who have the ability and skills to disseminate Leave No Trace information and provide effective outreach and training to diverse audiences.

“We’re very excited about both the continuity of our course providers moving forward and the new providers we’ll be adding in 2020,” said Lawhon. “That such venerable organizations want to be providers is a testament to the necessity and quality of the Master Educator Course.” The course provider lineup for 2020-24 includes nine of the existing providers (NOLS, AMC, ATC, SCA, Landmark Learning, ADK, BSA, SROM, and BCHC) and adds Touch of Nature Environmental Center (IL), Rainier Mountaineering, Inc. (WA), and the American Alpine Institute (WA). For 2019, the current providers will continue offering courses, while the newly selected providers will spend the year gearing up for courses in 2020.
