A Look Inside Our Partnership with Clif Bar

San Francisco, CA: This past Thursday we, The Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers Team West, had the privilege of teaching an awareness workshop at the Clif Bar headquarters in Emeryville, CA. Let us just tell you, Clif Bar has one of the coolest offices we have ever seen!

First, it was built with sustainability in mind (more on this later). Second, it is dog friendly! Third, every isle has plants that drape and twist about contributing to the endless green space vibe. Fourth, there is no shortage of natural light to help inspire a creative work flow. Fifth, there are four open air atrium gardens, allowing employees to enjoy a breath of fresh air while still within the building. Sixth, there is a preschool on site, called Base Camp, which has several benefits - one of which being that parents can enjoy lunch with their kiddos. Seventh, their on-site cafeteria, Kalis, serves up mostly local and organic cuisine every day. Delicious! Eighth, employees are encouraged to use their on-site gym, including trying out their bouldering wall and various fitness classes. And the list goes on...

Now, let's circle back to how sustainable Clif Bar is. For starters, we'll elaborate on some of the initiatives we saw and heard about first hand. Sustainable design is evident throughout their offices - reclaimed wood and materials were used in the construction of the building, donated outdoor gear is used as art and acts as inspiration, old climbing rope transforms staircases into tunnels of color; upcycled items are everywhere! In addition, during our time at Clif Bar we learned to "think like a tree." What does this mean? It means that Clif Bar wants to recycle all waste, use 100% renewable energy and improve and sustain the places they grow, just like a tree. We also learned about project 2080, in which employees roll up their sleeves and give back to the community. Furthermore, our tour guide extraordinaire, Nikki Ferenz, told us about how Clif Bar has created several neat incentives for employees that encourage buying environmentally friendly cars, making eco-friendly improvements to their homes and riding a bike to work!

A few other noble Clif Bar sustainability facts include:

  • Thanks to the installation of solar panels in 2011, they are able to derive about 100% of their electricity needs and about 70% of their hot water needs from the sun!

  • Clif Bar redesigned Clif SHOT BLOKS in 2008 to save 25,000 lbs of packaging a year!

  • In 2007, Clif Bar switched their entire field marketing fleet to biodiesel.

  • Clif Bar plants 5,000 trees annually to offset employee commutes.

  • In 2003 Clif Bar started using 100% recycled paperboard, generating an environmental savings upstream of 14,000 trees and 6 million gallons of water in one year!

Curious about how Clif Bar supports Leave No Trace? Below are some highlights from our all company meeting presentation that describe our partnership.

Clif Bar helps support the Leave No Trace program and cultivates a community of awareness and appreciation for the outdoors. Leave No Trace plus Clif Bar equals more people enjoying the outdoors responsibly!

This year we handed out over 2,500 Clif Bar Mini’s at events, including workshops for land managers, schools and universities, and programs offered to the general public across the country.

We attended 7 Ragnar Trail Relays in 2015. During the relays we gave away roughly 1,200 Clif Bars equating to 108,000 calories worth of energy for racers!

Thanks to a donation of Clif Bar's newest product our membership grew. More membership means that we are able to continue to educate millions about outdoor ethics across our public lands. In 2015 alone, the Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers will reach 15 million Americans.

Thank you, Clif Bar, for your continued and long-standing support of Leave No Trace and the places we play!!

Helping keep our wildness wild,
