The 2016 International Conference on Outdoor Leadership

California, PA: This past weekend, Subaru/Leave No Trace Traveling Trainers Steph and Andy, hit the road to attend the 2016 International Conference on Outdoor Leadership. The Wilderness Education Association (WEA) emphasizes the importance of education through the use and exploration of our public wild lands. The conference, an annual gathering of outdoor educators and leaders, is a place to share and learn the latest in educational techniques, practices, and research found in the outdoor and experiential education industry.

Leave No Trace was in attendance this year as a resource for outdoor professionals to encourage their students to become ethical stewards for the natural lands they explore and learn in. In addition to answering questions and being a part of the conference community the traveling trainers offered two workshops for educators.

The first workshop was an introduction to the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics Minimum Impact Program. Using interactive activities, the attendees learned useful teaching techniques to share with their students. The second workshop shared information about how to speak with individuals who are utilizing public lands in ways that are, “less than Leave No Trace”. This very important skill unpacks the reasoning behind a person’s actions while exploring places in nature.

Both workshops emphasize an importance to always explain the, why, behind Leave No Trace education. Through education, Leave No Trace desires to connect people to the natural world; encouraging them to become lifelong stewards of the environment in hopes to protect public lands for generations to come. Enjoy your world, Leave No Trace
