PEAK (Promoting Environmental Awareness in Kids) is a partnership program between Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics and REI (Recreation Equipment, Inc.) to educate children about the outdoors and responsible enjoyment of our public lands. The PEAK program is based on the seven principles of Leave No Trace and aims to teach minimum impact outdoor skills and ethics to children ages six to twelve.
We are very excited about reaching out to younger recreationists — the future of our lands is, after all, in their hands and minds. With the partnership and generous support of REI, the PEAK program will reach out to many kids through the efforts of our nation-wide network!
The program features a variety of fun and colorful illustrated characters, such as Trek & Track (pair of hiking boots), Zoom (binoculars), Digger (trowel), Flash (camera), Pointer (compass), Sparks (camp stove) and Pitch (tent). The PEAK Pack contains hands-on activities and interactive games to engage children with important messages in a fun and entertaining way.

The PEAK Pack includes six fun and engaging activities designed to teach kids ages six to twelve about Leave No Trace. Each activity or "module" can be delivered in 30–60 minutes depending on group size, available time, etc. The modules come in durable plastic folders and all six conveniently fit into an expanding folder (the Pack) with a Velcro closure that can be taken with you into the field or used in a classroom setting. Each module contains instructions on how to facilitate the activity as well as supporting materials. Also included in the PEAK Pack is a Start Card, which offers many helpful teaching tips and an overview of the Leave No Trace program. The Center recently added two new modules to the program, sold separtely, as well as a Teen Pack, which consists of four Leave No Trace related activities for older audiences. In addition, all PEAK materials are now available in Spanish. Contact the Center to find out more!
In our continuing efforts to reach kids with the Leave No Trace message, the Center has developed an instructional video designed to help teachers, camp counselors, youth serving organizations, schools, Master Educators and Trainers fully utilize the PEAK program. This comprehensive training video covers all aspects of using the PEAK program and is filled with teaching tips and helpful hints. Both the expert and novice educator will find this unique video useful. This project has been made possible through generous support from REI. The DVD is included in all PEAK Packs and is free for anyone who has previously purchased the PEAK Pack. Contact Sarah Folzenlogen to get a copy.
REI stores across the country offer PEAK presentations. Contact your local REI store for more information on bringing an intact youth group to a store for a program event. Click here to find an REI near you.
Please note that REI does not sell or loan the PEAK program — however, you can get this program to your group of kids in other ways!

The Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics is pleased to announce the establishment of a grant-giving fund specifically for PEAK materials. All “Packing with PEAK” education proposals will be processed and awarded by Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics. Due to the amount of grants requests we receive, the Center has adopted a policy in which only domestic applicants are eligible for our grants programs. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Center.
