Heather Leigh, Elgin, SC State Advocate

Statement of Purpose

Heather Leigh of Columbia, SC is the State Advocate for Leave No Trace (LNT) in the Palmetto State. Her first formal experience with LNT was as a participant in the Master Educator training course through a grant with Girl Scout USA, June 2004, back-packing through the Shenandoah National Forest in Virginia. As an Outdoor Trainer for approximately seven years for the Girl Scout Council of the Congaree (GSCA), it was only natural to pursue this opportunity and bring home the Principals of LNT. Both adult and girl members of GSCA have benefited from this grassroots effort through various activities – from troop level experiences to weekend events. The Congaree Girl Scout Council, through Heather, has integrated LNT principals with other trainings such as: challenge course, planning trips, adult team play and leadership courses.

South Carolina offers a multitude of environmental elements that will provide a variety of opportunities to incorporate LNT principals at various levels. Heather is currently in the process of contacting individuals who have previously participated at some level with LNT in an effort to evaluate the best possible methods of promoting LNT throughout the state.

Heather states that it is an honor to have been selected as the State Advocate for South Carolina and she takes this ethical responsibility seriously. Through a variety of educational opportunities, seminars and public communication, LNT volunteers can come together to elevate the grassroots movement from across the state to our neighborhoods. Email Heather to learn more about how you can Leave No Trace in your area.
