Mark Gleason, Grand Rapids, MI State Advocate

Statement of Purpose

LNT techniques are important for everyone to understand and be part of as they use our natural resources. To support my beliefs, for the last four years I have served as Michigan’s LNT Advocate. In those years a number of activities were undertaken for LNT. Those activities included several Master’s of LNT held at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore where NPS staff and others were trained. Additional activities included public demonstrations, trainings and distributing literature. Many of these activities were in partnership with the NPS, USFS as well as a number of schools in Michigan. An important part of my LNT activities occurred as part of the Isle Royale Institute programs while I was Director of that organization. In the future it would be wonderful to have a yearly Great Lakes region LNT Masters course as well as a greater partnership between advocates in our lake states. One LNT project I am hoping to improve on is the educational programs for boaters. Our Great Lake states have still need a lot of awareness for how we interact with our public water resources. One of the most important things that advocates can accomplish is to share the written information with the public.
