Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop | Fort Myers, FL

When: Wednesday, October 14, 2009, 7:30-9:00

Where: Rutenberg Park Building, Fort Myers, Florida (entrance on South Pointe just north of Cypress Blvd)

Cost: Free

Decription: Fun presentation with props, visuals, audience participation and plenty of humor.  Goals:  make kayakers and campers (and anyone who visits wilderness and natural areas) aware of their impact on the wilderness and help them decide ways in which they can Leave No Trace.  Will present all seven Leave No Trace Principles. Workshop will be held at a meeting of Southwest Florida Paddling Group.

Leave No Trace Trainer Course| Hillborough River State Park, FL

When: Nov 14-15, 2009

Where: Hillborough River State Park

Cost: $50, includes the cost of a $20 individual membership. (There will be an additional $6.00 fee to enter the park.)

Decription: This is a course designed for outdoor educators, youth leaders, agency employees and others who value the land and want to teach others how to protect it. Graduates will receive a Leave No Trace certificate and become registered as Trainers with the Leave No Trace Center for Outdoor Ethics.

This course is hands on and very much a participatory outing. Prerequisites include: proficiency in outdoor living skills and preparation with proper outdoor living equipment and food. Through focused activities, hands-on field experience and both formal and informal discussions, you will be introduced to concepts and methods that will advance your knowledge of Leave No Trace issues, expand your repertoire of low-impact skills and increase your effectiveness in teaching these important skills to others. This is a fun course where all participants have a part in demonstrating the choices that can be made to minimize our impact on the land and our resources. Note: Participants will need to provide their camping equipment. Early sign-up is recommended as classes will fill up quickly.

Gear: Backpack; sleeping bag for 20 degrees with a pad; tent (or you can share if you do not own one); clothing appropriate to weather forecast within 48 hours of event; closed toes shoes or boots; CrazyCreek style camp chair (optional); personal toiletries; headlamp; pen & paper (small tablet is fine). All cook gear and food is provided by instructor as part of the training.

Leave No Trace Awareness Workshop| Hillborough River State Park, FL

Where: Hillborough River State Park, Class meets at the recreation hall at parking lot #3.

Cost: Workshop is free- Park entrance fee: $6.00 per vehicle

Decription:This workshop is designed for educators, children, college students, Girl Scouts, outdoor professionals, Boy Scouts, trail crews, hiking club members and others interested in Leave No Trace skills and ethics. Participants receive introductory training in the skills and ethics of Leave No Trace. Workshop topics include the underlying ethics and seven principles of Leave No Trace: Plan Ahead and Prepare -Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces -Dispose of Waste Properly -Leave What You Find -Minimize Campfire Impacts -Respect Wildlife -Be Considerate of Other Visitors.
