When/Where: Sunday, March 14, 2009 through Friday, March 19, 2009. The course will feature five nights of winter backpacking in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP), and begin and end at Solid Rock Outdoor Ministries (SROM) in Laramie, WY. If you fly to Colorado for this course, please plan to arrive at Denver International Airport on March 13th and depart March 20th. Pickup service from Denver International Airport can be arranged for you.
Who: This course is for adults (18+) who want to teach the principles of Leave No Trace (LNT) outdoor ethics to adults or youth, while also becoming competent in avalanche safety, snow shelters, and winter backcountry living and travel.
Description: Upon successful completion of this course you will be registered as an LNT Trainer with the LNT Center for Outdoor Ethics. You will also receive a Level 1 avalanche training certificate. After an evening of classroom lectures and course orientation at SROM’s facility in Laramie, we will spend five nights and five days in the beautiful backcountry of RMNP learning to apply and teach the LNT principles in winter backcountry settings.
Various teaching methods will be utilized throughout the training so you can gain confidence in planning workshops to share LNT with people of all ages in a variety of settings. You will learn about avalanches: terrain factors, influence of weather, methods for evaluating snowpack stability, decision making, route finding, and beacon and rescue techniques. You will also learn about various styles of snow shelters, and sleep in one you construct.
The course will conclude with a classroom session, debriefing, and an evening celebration at SROM’s facility in Laramie. For more information about this course, visit SROM Winter Training Course.
Instructors and SROM: Jim Doenges, SROM Assistant Program Director, is an LNT Master Educator, a board-certified Professional Member of the American Avalanche Association, and a Wilderness First Responder. He holds a Master of Science degree in Biology and has over 20 years of experience leading winter trips. Mr. Doenges will be assisted by two SROM LNT Trainers. SROM is the only wilderness ministry accredited by the Association for Experiential Education. SROM is a nonprofit ministry with over 25 years of wilderness programming experience. SROM is an equal opportunity service provider and operates under permits issued by Rocky Mountain National Park. For more information about SROM, visit our website at www.srom.org
Gear: SROM will provide tents, sleeping pads, stoves, cooking gear, avalanche beacons and probes, snow shovels, and other group gear. A clothing and packing list and other information are sent to those who register for the course.
Cost: The cost is $600 per person which covers registration with the LNT Center for Outdoor Ethics as an LNT Trainer, Level 1 avalanche certification, all food, gear, RMNP permits and fees, van transportation from Laramie, and instruction. Those submitting an application and $100 deposit before Jan. 1st receive a 5% discount. SROM scholarships are also available on an as-needed and first-come basis.
Contact: To receive a course application contact Jim Doenges, jim@srom.org or (303)594-8113.
